Our research is focussed on reducing the burden of the two most widespread oral health problems: dental caries (or tooth decay) and periodontal (gum) disease.

Our research activities are coordinated under five research programs which cover the spectrum of oral health research from monitoring and identifying oral health problems in the community, to developing novel technologies and materials that diagnose, prevent and treat oral disease, to trialling and evaluating new oral care products.

Five research programs

1: Oral Health Informatics

Improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the delivery of oral health services through a better understanding of the demographics of oral diseases.

2: Novel Diagnostics, Vaccines and Pharmaceuticals

Developing diagnostics and novel preventive and therapeutic strategies for the factors, both bacterial and host, that contribute to periodontitis and other inflammatory oral mucosal diseases.

3: Nutraceutical Development

Developing novel reminerlisation and antimicrobial technologies that can repair and protect decayed teeth.

4: Advanced Dental Materials

Developing advanced dental materials for use in restorative dental work.

5: Clinical Trials and Product Development

Conducting industry-funded multi-centre clinical trials of world-first oral health products.
