Dental erosion

What is dental erosion?

Dental erosion is the most common chronic disease in children aged 5 - 17. Erosion is initially found in tooth enamel and, if unchecked, can proceed to the underlying dentine. Dental erosion can cause changes in the colour or shape of teeth and lead to pain.

The main cause of erosion is the exposure of teeth to acids, particularly through excessive consumption of soft drinks.

What is the Oral Health CRC doing?

Oral Health CRC researchers are investigating ways of producing over-the-counter dental health products as well as functional foods and beverages which benefit teeth by minimising the erosion potential, as well as assisting in preventing dental caries (or decay). Products being investigated by the CRC include sports drinks and chewing gum.
